They freely mixed Louis XV scrolls with Renaissance creatures and classical beading, often in a single object. This approach, known as eclecticism or historicism, produced some of the most richly decorated lighting of the age, made for grand apartments that wanted to impress.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis pair of three-light wall sconces, attributed to the late nineteenth or early twentieth century, shows that eclectic spirit. Each has a tall cartouche backplate with scrolls and leaves. Three arms spring from it: one rising at the centre, and two curving out to the sides. The arms are lined with rows of fine beading, and beneath each side arm a scrolled bracket ends in a small winged creature, a chimera of the kind beloved by Renaissance ornamentists. Every arm ends in a wide, leafy bobèche. Each sconce weighs 2.5 kg, so they are substantial pieces.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe sconces are in good vintage condition, with a deep patina.
