vintage-pair-of-wall-sconces-with-bearded-88389
Vintage Pair of Wall Sconces with Bearded Bacchus-Style Masks, Patinated Metal with Leafy Arms, Two Lights Each

Bacchus, the Roman name for the Greek god Dionysus, ruled over wine, feasting and merriment. Artists usually showed him crowned with vine leaves and grapes, and his bearded, laughing face became a favourite ornament for dining rooms, wine cellars and banqueting halls across Europe. A Bacchic mask on the wall was a cheerful invitation to eat and drink well.

This pair of wall sconces is centred on just such a mask. Each has a bearded face with flowing hair and an open mouth, crowned with a spray of leaves, set on a narrow wall plate flanked by more leafy sprays. Two curving reeded arms sweep out from behind the mask, each wrapped in leaves where it turns up to hold a wide, pierced drip pan with embossed decoration and a candle-style sleeve. The metal has a dark, mellow patina that brings out the deep modelling of the faces.

The sconces are in good vintage condition, with signs of age, as pictured. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. They bring a lively, characterful touch to a dining room, a library or a wine cellar.

In short, this is a vintage pair of wall sconces in patinated metal, with bearded Bacchus-style masks, leafy arms and two lights each.
