vintage-setter-dog-sculpture-gold-tone-35830
Vintage Setter Dog Sculpture, Gold-Tone Metal Hunting Dog on Naturalistic Base, Animalier Style, 20 cm

In nineteenth-century France, a group of sculptors devoted themselves entirely to animals. They were called the animaliers, and they studied horses, deer and dogs from life, in fields and kennels, to capture how each one moved. Their small sculptures of hunting dogs became especially popular in country houses and libraries, and the style has been loved ever since.

This sculpture is in the animalier style. It shows a setter-type hunting dog walking forward, head raised and alert, as if it has just caught a scent. The long, wavy coat, the feathered tail and the soft drooping ears are all shown in detail. The dog stands on an oval base modelled as rough ground, with a moulded edge.

The sculpture is in very good condition. The screws that fix the dog to its base have been replaced. It makes a handsome piece for a desk, a bookshelf or a mantel, and a thoughtful gift for anyone who loves dogs or country life.

In short, this is a vintage animalier-style sculpture of a setter-type hunting dog in gold-tone metal, on a naturalistic oval base.
