Lid, bowl and stand are all worked in gadrooning: rows of rounded ribs, here set on a swirl, a decoration borrowed from Renaissance silversmiths because each rib catches the light separately and makes the whole surface seem to turn. A pine-cone finial on a collar of leaves crowns the domed lid, and scrolled handles rise from either side of the bowl. The bowl stands on a pedestal foot within a matching stand finished with a beaded border. Its finish has mellowed to a warm golden tone across the ribs, rims and stand, with the soft wear that comes from years of handling and care.
