vintage-small-animalier-cow-sculpture-on-12800
Vintage Small Animalier Cow Sculpture on Leaf-Moulded Base, Gold-Tone Metal, Attributed 19th–20th Century, 10.4 cm

In 1849, the painter Rosa Bonheur exhibited a huge canvas of oxen ploughing a field in the French countryside, and it made her famous. Farm animals, once seen as humble subjects, became worthy of serious art. Painters and sculptors followed her lead, and small sculptures of cows, oxen and sheep found a place on desks and mantelpieces across Europe.

This small sculpture shows a cow in mid-stride, head lowered, as if grazing her way across a meadow. Her body is solid and rounded, with the bones of the hips and shoulders modelled clearly, and her tail curls up over her back. She stands on a rectangular base with a raised top and a moulded border of tall, overlapping leaves. This classical border is known as a water-leaf moulding, after the long, smooth leaves of water plants that inspired it. The gold-tone metal has a warm, mellow patina.

The sculpture is in good condition, except that one ear is missing, as pictured. It has a pleasingly solid presence for its size, and it makes a charming piece for a desk, a bookshelf or a country-style kitchen, or a paperweight with character.

In short, this is a vintage small animalier sculpture of a walking cow in gold-tone metal, on a leaf-moulded base, attributed to the nineteenth or twentieth century. The base measures 10.4 × 6.2 cm, and it is exactly as pictured.

DETAILS

Size: Base about 10.4 × 6.2 cm (4.1 × 2.4 in).
