vintage-small-lobed-dish-with-shell-73971
Vintage Small Lobed Dish with Shell Handles, Silver-Tone Metal Trinket Bowl with Gadrooned Border, 10.5 cm

Small dishes with handles have a long history on European tables and dressing tables. They held salt, sweets or a little sauce at dinner, and rings or pins in the bedroom. Because they were picked up so often, makers gave them shapely handles and fine borders, so that even a tiny piece felt special in the hand.

This small dish is a charming example. The bowl is shaped in four soft lobes, like a flower seen from above. A gadrooned border, a row of short rounded ribs, runs around the rim, and two shell-shaped handles extend from the sides, with small matching shells set just below the rim. The scallop shell is a motif French designers have used since the eighteenth century, when it became a signature of the decorative rocaille style.

The dish is in good vintage condition, with tarnish across the surface and a few small green spots in the well. A gentle polish would bring back its shine. It makes a pretty dish for rings and earrings on a dressing table or a bedside table.

In short, this is a vintage small lobed dish in silver-tone metal, with shell handles and a gadrooned border, 10.5 cm wide.
