vintage-small-pair-of-empire-style-column-55273
Vintage Small Pair of Empire Style Column Candlesticks, Polished Gold-Tone Metal with Leaf-Decorated Bases, 24 cm

In a well-run nineteenth-century household, polishing the candlesticks was a weekly task. Wax was scraped away, the metal rubbed bright, and the candlesticks returned to the mantel or the table gleaming. A shining pair of candlesticks was a quiet sign of a house that was well looked after.

This small pair of candlesticks has just been brought back to that bright state. Each stands on a round base with a beaded border, rising in a gentle dome covered in a ring of crisp leaves. A slim column, marked with fine rings and beaded collars, rises to a rounded, urn-shaped candle cup topped by a flat rim to catch dripping wax. The shapes are those of the Empire style, simple, upright and classical, and the polished finish shows the metal as it would have looked when new, before time darkened it.

The candlesticks are in very good condition and have been recently polished to a high shine. There are a few small dents at the edges of the bases, probably from old knocks. They make a bright, classic pair for a mantelpiece, a sideboard or a dining table.

In short, this is a vintage small pair of Empire style column candlesticks in polished gold-tone metal, with leaf-decorated bases. Each is 24 cm tall, and they are exactly as pictured.

DETAILS

Size: Height 24 cm (9.4 in); base diameter 11.4 cm (4.5 in) each.
