vintage-small-silver-tone-metal-round-82494
Vintage Small Silver-Tone Metal Round Dish with Moulded Rim, 14 cm Bottle Coaster or Trinket Dish, Classic Tableware

The well-set European table was always built from small things as much as large ones. Alongside the platters and tureens stood a whole family of modest pieces, each with a quiet role to play: holding a bottle, a candle, a few sweets or a pinch of salt. Their makers gave them the same careful finish as their grander companions, because a table was judged as a whole.

This vintage dish is one of those quiet companions. It is a small round form with straight, shallow sides and a flat well, finished at the top with a stepped moulded rim. That moulding, several raised bands set one inside another, is borrowed from the cornices of classical architecture, where layered edges were used to catch shadow and give depth to a plain surface. On a dish this size it turns a simple circle into something considered and complete.

The dish reaches us with an even tarnish across its surface and a few small dark spots in the well, the natural marks of a piece that has seen years of use. We have left it as it is, so that you can choose whether to polish it bright or keep its softened tone. It makes an elegant coaster for a wine bottle on the dining table, or a small dish for rings and keepsakes on a dressing table.

In short, this is a vintage small round dish in silver-tone metal with a stepped moulded rim, 14 cm in diameter.
