vintage-small-table-lamp-oxblood-red-39271
Vintage Small Table Lamp, Oxblood Red Ceramic Urn on Brass Base with Cream Moiré-Effect Shade, Bedside Lamp, 30 cm

Not so long ago, going to bed meant carrying a candle up the stairs. When electricity arrived, the bedside lamp took its place, and it quickly became one of the most personal lights in the home: the one you read by, and the last one you switch off at night. Makers dressed these small lamps in fine materials, as if they were jewellery for the nightstand.

This small table lamp combines warm brass with a rich red ceramic. It stands on a square, stepped brass base with a band of relief ornament around its edge. Above, a slender brass stem rises to an urn-shaped body glazed in a deep oxblood red. Deep red glazes like this have a long history: Chinese potters perfected a famous one called sang de bœuf, or ox blood, and European potteries later created their own versions of that colour. A brass collar holds the bulb, and the lamp is topped by a cream fabric shade with a moiré, or watered-silk, effect and a gilt trim.

The lamp is in good vintage condition. It is just the right size for a nightstand, where its shade gives a soft, warm pool of light for reading. It would also sit nicely on a desk or a narrow console.

In short, this is a vintage small table lamp with an oxblood red ceramic urn on a brass base, with a cream moiré-effect shade.
