vintage-three-light-candelabrum-table-80541
Vintage Three-Light Candelabrum Table Lamp, Silver-Tone Metal with Ram’s Head Scroll Arms, Faceted Glass Centre Spike, Gadrooned Dish Base

The ram’s head is one of the oldest motifs in classical decoration. In ancient Rome, rams’ heads were carved on altars, where they recalled the animals offered in sacrifice, often linked by garlands of fruit and flowers. Neoclassical designers of the late eighteenth century revived the motif with enthusiasm, setting rams’ heads on tripods, urns, clock cases and candelabra, where their curling horns echoed the scrolls of the design.

This three-light candelabrum lamp carries that classical motif. Two arms curve out from the central stem in open, leafy scrolls, each ending in a ram’s head that supports a drip pan and a ball-shaped candle cup. A third light rises at the centre, and in front of it stands a tall, faceted glass spike that catches the light. Small cast figures gather around the foot of the slim stem, which rises from a wide, dished base with a gadrooned centre, like a chamberstick tray. Each light carries a candle sleeve.

DETAILS

Size: Height 40 cm (15.7 in) to the top of the glass spike.
