vintage-three-light-rococo-style-wall-77212
Vintage Three-Light Rococo Style Wall Sconce, Gilt Metal Cartouche Backplate with Scrolled Arms, Candle Lights, 40 cm

In candle-lit houses, the number of flames on a wall light said something about the room. A single candle was enough for a corridor, but the principal rooms were lit by sconces with two, three or more arms, so that their light could reach across the space. A three-light sconce was made for a room that mattered.

This wall sconce is one of those. Its tall backplate is shaped as a cartouche, an ornamental shield framed by scrolls and leaves, rising to a pointed crest and tapering to a scrolled drop below. Large backplates like this descend from the polished metal plates once fixed behind candles to reflect their light back into the room. Three arms grow from the centre: one comes straight forward, and two curve out to the sides, each ending in a wide bobèche with a candle-style sleeve. The relief decoration runs over every surface, and the gilt finish has darkened to a deep, warm tone.

The sconce is in very good condition. It is meant to be the centrepiece of a wall rather than one of a set, so give it space to be seen. It sits beautifully above a sideboard in a dining room, or at the turn of a staircase.

In short, this is a vintage three-light Rococo style wall sconce in gilt metal, with a scrolled cartouche backplate and candle lights. It is 40 cm tall and exactly as pictured.

DETAILS

Size: Height 40 cm (15.7 in), about the height of a magnum of champagne.
Material: Gilt metal
Style-Period: Rococo style; vintage
Shipping: Professionally packed, fully insured, worldwide.
