vintage-two-arm-wall-sconce-with-amber-57403
Vintage Two-Arm Wall Sconce with Amber Etched Glass Hurricane Shades, Gold-Painted Metal with Fan Backplate, 22 cm

Long before electricity, candles needed protection from the draughts that swept through houses and gardens. The answer was a glass chimney placed around the flame, known as a hurricane shade. When candles gave way to bulbs, the shape stayed, because it softened the light so well, and glass hurricane shades became a favourite for wall lights.

This wall sconce carries two such shades. A round, fan-ribbed backplate fixes to the wall, and from it two curved arms rise in a gentle U-shape. Each holds a tulip-shaped hurricane shade of warm amber glass, edged with a beaded rim. The glass is decorated with a frosted floral pattern; patterns like this are made by etching the surface so that the design appears softly white against the clear colour. When lit, the amber glass gives a warm, honeyed glow.

The sconce is in good condition. The metal has been repainted in gold, and it shows a few marks and small imperfections from age and from that repainting. The glass shades are in good condition. It has already been given a second life, and it is ready for a third. It looks lovely beside a dressing-table mirror, or in a bedroom or entrance.

In short, this is a vintage two-arm wall sconce in gold-painted metal with a fan backplate and amber etched glass hurricane shades.
