Pair of Antique Empire Style Two-Tone Bronze Winged Cherub Wall Sconces, Gilt Wings and Candle Cups, Two Lights, 19th Century
A winged cherub stands on a gilded ball on each of these sconces, arms stretched out to either side as he holds up two candle cups like an offering. His body is finished in a dark, smooth patina, while his tall feathered wings rise behind him in bright gilding, sweeping up above his shoulders. The cups are gilded too, with rope-twist bands and leaf-cast drops, and ivory candle sleeves with sculpted drips. Below the ball, a gilt culot of fluted leaves finishes in a little cluster of grapes. The contrast of dark bronze and gold is classic Empire and Restauration style. They’re a striking pair for either side of a bed, a mirror or a fireplace.
