Art Deco gave the desk lamp a new religion: geometry. Where the previous generation had dressed its lamps in leaves and scrolls, the modern desk of the 1920s and 30s wanted machine lines — chrome, angles, and function worn openly. Lamps of this type put the whole mechanism on display: a faceted shade pivoting on an angular strap-metal frame, so adjusting the light became part of the object's design rather than something to hide.
This lamp is in the French Art Deco taste, its structure in chromed metal: a hooded, faceted shade that tilts on its mount, carried by a geometric openwork frame of flat straps rising from a stepped square socle, the whole standing on a rectangular block of veined marble in cream and rust tones with its push-button switch set into the stone. Notice where the switch sits — in the marble itself, not on the cord — a period design decision that kept the desk surface tidy and the gesture of switching on as deliberate as the lamp's lines. The frame stands on real stone for the same reason the era loved the pairing: the marble's weight anchors the cantilevered shade. The lamp is otherwise presented in its original surface: the chrome is pitted with losses in places, and there is an old repair to the reverse — stated plainly and shown in the photographs, the honest skin of a working lamp that was never prettified. Whoever angled this shade over their paperwork before you kept the lamp in service. It belongs on a desk, a writing table, or a home-office shelf.
