This lamp is French, from the 1950s–70s, in the Jansen taste: a slender column of deep red-brown wood between ringed brass collars, rising from a spreading brass socle to a beaded brass platform, the whole standing on a stepped plinth of grey-black veined marble. Lift it and the design explains itself — over two kilograms for a modest lamp, nearly all of it in the stone, which is what lets a tall narrow column stand rock-steady where a light base would topple with the first pull of the cord.
