Speed was the obsession of the Art Deco decades, and no animal embodied it like the greyhound — the era put the running dog on everything from radiator caps to railway posters. Sculptors answered with groups like this one: not a single hound but a cascade of them, caught at the moment they leave the ground, so the whole piece reads as one continuous line of motion from rock to outstretched muzzle.
This group is in the Art Deco taste, three greyhounds in full flight cast in bronze, launching one after another from a rocky outcrop — the sculpture worked in a deliberate double patina, the dogs in warm golden brown against rockwork finished in a mottled green, mounted on a shaped black wood base. Stand to the side and look at where the metal touches the ground: only the last dog's hind legs and the rock itself — every other point of all three animals hangs unsupported in the air, the casting feat that gives the group its speed and separates an ambitious workshop from a cautious one. The group is unsigned.
The two patinas are even and attractive, with light age-consistent wear to the high points, and the recomposed wood base is sound; the photographs show the piece as it is. Whoever gave these hounds room to run before you kept them well. The group asks for a long surface — a mantel, a console, or the top of a low bookcase.
