St. James's Street, at the heart of London's clubland, was a natural subject: a thoroughfare of coaches, pedestrians, and townhouses that carried the visible texture of eighteenth-century urban life, reproduced here from an original drawing in a named private collection, as the print itself records.

This engraving is English, nineteenth century, depicting St. James's Street as it appeared in 1750, hand-coloured over the printed line work. The composition runs the full depth of the street in perspective, terraced townhouses and shopfronts receding toward a distant church tower, the roadway filled with horse-drawn coaches, mounted figures, and pedestrians in period dress going about the business of the street. The colouring is applied with restraint — warm ochre and grey tones across the buildings and sky, small touches of red and blue picking out individual figures — the hand-tinting that turns a black-and-white engraving into something closer to a watercolour sketch. The engraving is set within a green-grey fabric mount and presented in a gilt wood frame, the mount's cool tone offsetting the warm sepia of the print itself.
