Antique French Art Deco Crystal Bowl on Silver-Plated Pedestal Stand — France, circa 1930

The pedestal centrepiece belongs to a specific Art Deco preoccupation: the table as a place for architecture in miniature. Where earlier styles had favoured a single ornamental vessel, the Deco designers of the 1920s and 1930s split the form into two considered parts — a crystal bowl, cut and faceted to catch the light, set upon a metal stand that was itself an exercise in classical proportion, reduced and geometricised for the modern dining table. The result was a piece that could be admired empty, used for fruit or flowers, and disassembled for cleaning without compromising either part.

This piece is French, circa 1930, combining a geometrically cut crystal bowl with a silver-plated stand. The bowl's rim is engraved in a repeating pattern of crossed diagonal cuts framed by vertical panels — the faceting that catches and refracts light along the full circumference, giving the glass its sparkle even before anything is placed inside it. The stand beneath is a study in reduced classicism: a pair of slender fluted columns, doubled rather than singular, rising from a circular base engraved with concentric ribbed bands, the columns supporting a domed collar that receives the bowl. Note how the doubled columns — two slim shafts rather than one substantial one — lighten the whole composition visually while providing the same structural support, the Deco instinct for reducing mass without reducing presence. The crystal bowl lifts cleanly away from the stand, allowing the two elements to be washed, stored, or displayed separately.

The silver plating carries light surface wear and patina consistent with age, as photographed; the crystal is clear and the cutting crisp throughout. Whoever kept this piece before you preserved both elements together and in working order — bowl and stand still fit precisely as designed. It sits well on a console, a cabinet, or a dining table as a centrepiece.
