Antique French Art Deco Crystal Vase, Frosted Blue with Floral Oval Cartouche — France, circa 1920

The French crystal houses of the 1910s and 1920s were working through one of the most productive periods in the history of decorative glass. The techniques that Gallé and Daum had developed for the Art Nouveau generation — acid etching, relief moulding, layered colour — passed into the Art Deco decade transformed: the sinuous plant forms tightened into geometry, the backgrounds became more structured, but the commitment to glass as a surface for serious decoration remained entirely intact. The cylinder vase, tall and straight-sided, was one of the period's preferred forms — a column of colour and texture that held a room without competing with the flowers placed inside it.

This vase is French, circa 1920, in pale blue frosted crystal, the body moulded overall with a fine diamond-point lattice that gives the surface its texture and catches the light across the full height of the piece. Set into this ground, an oval cartouche frames a delicate floral composition — a slender stem with pendant bell-shaped flowers, rendered in the naturalist manner that the period inherited from Art Nouveau and refined into something quieter and more considered. The pale blue of the glass sits between sky and celadon, warm in natural light and cooler under artificial light — the shifting quality of coloured glass that no paint or ceramic can replicate. The rim retains its original unpolished edge, consistent with period production.

The glass has come through a century in very good condition — the body sound, the lattice ground crisp, the floral cartouche intact. It stands well on a mantelpiece, a console, or a windowsill where the light can reach it from behind.
