Antique French Art Deco Pewter Vase, Rose Relief, Noël Collet CID — France, 1920s-1930s

The 1920s and 1930s saw a genuine flourishing of French pewter as an art metal, produced by named designers working through recognised marks rather than anonymous manufacturers. The CID stamp — denoting fine or pure tin — appears on pieces from this period that were made to be kept and admired, not simply used, and Noël Collet was among the silversmiths and metal artists whose work carried that mark, applying the same repoussé technique long used in precious metal to pewter's softer, more forgiving surface.

This vase is French, 1920s to 1930s, by Noël Collet, marked CID, in repoussé pewter. The form is a full-bodied ovoid vase with a flared, everted rim, its surface divided into two decorative registers that meet at the shoulder: below, angular triangular and stepped geometric panels worked in low relief, their hard-edged forms the pure Art Deco vocabulary of the period; above, a band of roses and leaves in full, rounded high relief, each bloom modelled with individually overlapping petals and naturalistic foliage. Note the contrast between these two registers — the machine-age geometry below giving way to a soft, hand-worked floral band above, the two decorative languages of the period held together on a single vessel rather than choosing one over the other, which is precisely what distinguishes a considered Art Deco piece from one working in only a single mode. The repoussé technique — hammered from the reverse to raise the design in relief — gives the rose petals genuine depth and dimension rather than the flatter look of a cast or moulded decoration.

The pewter carries a deep, even grey patina consistent with its age, the relief crisp and undamaged throughout. It stands well on a console, a mantelpiece, or a shelf, its considerable presence suited to a room that can give it space.
