Antique French Art Deco Silver-Plated Candlestick, Geometric and Gadroon Ornament — France, circa 1930
The Art Deco period did something to the candlestick that no previous style had quite managed: it made geometry feel warm. Where the Empire had used ornament to declare authority and the Louis XV period had dissolved form into curves, the best Deco silversmiths of the 1920s and 1930s understood that a candlestick could be both precise and inviting — the engraved chevron, the gadroon border, the stepped collar, all applied with enough restraint to let the polished metal do the work that ornament does in heavier pieces.
This candlestick is French, circa 1930, in silver-plated metal, and it is a piece of considered quality. The form rises from a circular base bordered with a fine gadroon frieze — the tight, repeated convex lobes that silversmiths have used since the seventeenth century to add tactile interest to a flat surface without breaking its line — through a waisted stem enriched at the baluster with engraved geometric ornament: chevrons and lancet forms arranged in a repeating band around the widest point of the column. Above, the stem narrows through a triple-ring collar to the socket tube, which flares slightly at the nozzle rim. Note how the engraved ornament appears at the baluster and again, mirrored, on the face of the base — the same motif at top and bottom, the discipline of a designer who understood that a candlestick is seen from every angle and must be considered in the round. The silver plate is bright and even throughout.
