Antique French Art Deco Table Lamp Base, Gilt Régule Swan Neck, Numbered Model — France, circa 1930
The Art Deco desk lamp of the 1930s solved a problem that earlier styles had refused to acknowledge: that a lamp on a working desk is looked at as much as it is used, and that its form, not just its light, shapes the room. The swan-neck — a single continuous curve rising from a weighted base and bending at the crown to hold the socket — was the period's most elegant answer. It did with one unbroken line what a Victorian lamp needed a column, capital, and shade-ring to do. The best examples were cast in régule, numbered, and sold through the department stores and lighting houses of Paris as design objects as much as functional fittings.
This base is French, circa 1930, cast in gilt régule with a matte gold patina that has settled handsomely over nine decades. The form is a single sweeping arc — narrow at the crown where it bends to hold the socket, widening as it descends and flowing without interruption into a stepped rectangular base with chamfered corners and a moulded plinth border. Note how the inner face of the curve is slightly hollowed and the outer face carries a gentle convex swell — the detail that gives the arc its sense of tension rather than simply bending a bar, the difference between a designed curve and a bent one. The model number 6225 is stamped in relief into the underside of the base at the cable entry, the mark of a manufacturer who catalogued his production seriously.
The gilt shows light, honest wear at the high points of the base consistent with decades of use; the casting is sound throughout. It arrives fully rewired and ready to use, plug adapted to your country at no charge — a base that takes a drum shade, a cone, or a simple globe equally well.
It arrives professionally packed and fully insured. All duties and import charges are our responsibility — you pay nothing beyond the listed price. Returns are accepted within 30 days.
