The hall lantern occupies a particular place in the French domestic tradition — the fixture that greets a visitor before any other, hung in the entryway or stairwell where a single strong light source, protected from drafts by glass, was both practical and a statement of the household's standing. Unlike a chandelier, meant to be seen from below across a room, the lantern was built to be seen from several angles as one moved through a hall or up a stair, and its glazed sides existed as much to be looked into as to be looked through.

This lantern is French, early twentieth century, in bronze and brass, built as a hexagonal glazed form suspended on a chain. The body is a six-sided glass-paned cage, each panel held within a slender brass frame, tapering inward toward the base and rising at the crown to a scrolling brass cresting — hook-form volutes that curl outward at each corner of the hexagon, the decorative flourish that turns a functional cage into something with genuine presence. Within, the fixture holds multiple candle-style light sources, their form continuing the lantern's implied history as a candle fixture even in its electrified state. The chain and canopy at the top are original to the piece, patinated to match the bronze and brass body below.

The lantern has come through in good order — the glass panels intact, the brass and bronze frame sound, the scrolled cresting present at all corners. It arrives fully rewired and ready to use, hung from its original chain — ready for a stairwell, an entrance hall, or a covered porch.
