Antique French Crystal and Brass Table Lamp Base, Swirled Glass Urn Form — France, Early 20th Century

The glass and brass table lamp base was one of the more elegant solutions the early twentieth century found for bringing light-catching material to the bedside or the console table. Where a purely metal base relies on polish and casting detail to hold the eye, a glass body does something different — it gathers and refracts the light around it, changing character with the time of day and the angle of view, and the best examples combined this quality with brass fittings substantial enough to give the lamp real structural presence.

This lamp base is French, early twentieth century, combining clear glass with brass mounts. The form rises from a fluted glass foot — a wide, ribbed disc with deep vertical channels radiating outward from the centre — through a brass collar to a swirled glass urn body, its surface worked with a dramatic spiralling wave pattern that catches light along every twist. Above, a further brass collar transitions to a flared glass trumpet form, echoing the fluted base in reverse, before the fitting rises to the original brass gallery and socket at the crown. Note how the two glass elements — the fluted foot and the flared upper trumpet — share the same vertical channelling, framing the swirled central body between two related but distinct treatments of the same technique, the compositional logic that ties the whole base together despite its three-part construction.

The lamp is sound with no damage or missing parts, though it requires cleaning and rewiring before use, as noted. Once refreshed, it will make a considered bedside or console lamp, its glass body giving genuine character to a room in daylight as well as by lamplight.
