Antique French Empire Style Gilt Metal Urn Lamp — Green-Painted Body with Pleated Shade

The urn was one of the great borrowed forms of the neoclassical revival — lifted from ancient funerary and garden vessels and pressed into service as everything from mantel ornament to lamp base, its swelling profile and stepped foot instantly recognisable across a century of French decorative taste. This is a table lamp in gilt metal with an urn-form body finished in a deep green painted ground, banded above by a guilloché-cast gilt collar — guilloché being the engine-turned, interlocking wave pattern common to Empire and Restauration metalwork — and below by a ring of stiff acanthus leaves at the socket of a turned, beaded column base. The green ground against gilt metal is a pairing seen often on French urn lamps of this general type, imitating the look of patinated bronze against ormolu mounts without our making either metal claim as fact. No maker's mark is visible in the photograph supplied. A pleated fabric shade in ivory-white completes the piece.
