This is a gilt metal candlestick lamp in the Louis XVI taste, its tapering fluted column rising from a stepped, beaded foot to a socket dressed with a faux drip candle sleeve and a faceted glass flame-form bulb cover. The fluting along the stem — the shallow vertical grooves running its length — is a hallmark of the neoclassical vocabulary that succeeded the curves of the Rococo, borrowed directly from the reeding of classical columns.
