Antique French Marquetry Wood Glove Box, Floral Inlay, Napoleon III Louis Philippe Style — France, 19th Century

The glove box was a fixture of the well-appointed nineteenth-century dressing table — long and narrow by necessity, sized to hold gloves in their proper length rather than folded, and dressed with the same care given to any object destined for daily view. French cabinetmakers of the Napoleon III and Louis Philippe periods turned this practical requirement into an opportunity for genuine decorative work, applying marquetry techniques more commonly seen on larger furniture to a small object that would sit, opened and closed, on a lady's dressing table every day.

This box is French, nineteenth century, in fruitwood with fine floral marquetry inlay. The rectangular form is bound in a warm fruitwood frame, its lid inset with a dark contrasting ground against which a bouquet of flowers is worked in lighter wood marquetry — individual blooms, leaves, and stems inlaid with genuine botanical variety, no two flowers identical in form. A fine banded border in a repeating lozenge geometric pattern runs around the edge of the lid, the disciplined counterpoint to the organic bouquet at its centre. An inscription reading "Menton" appears worked into the marquetry, likely marking the town of origin or a presentation detail. The box opens on original brass hinges and retains its original key and lock, both in full working order.

The box is in good condition overall, the marquetry intact and legible throughout, the lock and key functioning as they should after more than a century of use. It is ready for a dressing table, a desk, or a shelf, whether used for gloves, jewellery, or correspondence as its owner prefers.
