Antique French Marquetry Wood Toilette Box, Napoleon III Style, Locking Correspondence Box — France, Late 19th Century

The toilette box, or correspondence box, was a fixture of the well-furnished Napoleon III household — a lockable case kept on a dressing table or writing desk to hold letters, small personal items, or dressing accessories away from prying eyes. Made in dark polished wood and finished with fine inlay, these boxes were as much a piece of furniture in miniature as a practical container, built to sit in full view and to be handled daily by their owner.

This box is French, late nineteenth century, Napoleon III style, in dark polished wood with fine marquetry inlay. The rectangular lid is bordered with a fine banded frame and centred with an oval floral medallion inlaid in lighter wood, surrounded by a delicate wreath pattern; a smaller matching flourish decorates the front face of the box below. The wood carries a deep, glossy varnish and an attractive natural patina built up over more than a century of handling. The box retains its original lock mechanism and its original key — the key does not yet turn fully, and the source notes the lock would benefit from gentle loosening or light restoration before regular use.

The box is in good condition for its age, with a fine natural polish throughout. Light surface scratches and a few small marks are visible on the lid, and there is a fine natural crack in the wood at the base interior — the kind of honest, age-consistent detail that confirms genuine antiquity rather than detracting from it, as photographed. It suits a "campagne chic" or French country interior beautifully, and is ready for a dressing table, a writing desk, or a shelf.
