Antique French Neoclassical Brass Table Lamp, Fluted Column with Rope Swag, White Shade — France, circa 1930

The neoclassical column lamp was one of the French decorative tradition's most enduring forms. Drawn from the candlestick columns of the Empire period — the fluted shaft, the beaded base, the rope-twist swag that loops around the body — it passed into the electric lamp trade of the early twentieth century without losing a single element, because the proportions were already correct and the ornament already considered. A lamp that quotes the column quotes architecture itself, and that authority is difficult to argue with across a room.

This lamp is French, circa 1930, in solid brass, the form a candlestick lamp of considerable refinement. The base is a wide circular platform bordered with a beaded gadroon edge — the same bead moulding that appears at the collar above, tying top and base together. The column shaft rises through a fluted baluster — the vertical reeding running cleanly from base collar to disc collar — with a rope-twist swag hanging from the upper collar, its knotted cord form cast in relief against the fluted surface. Note how the rope swag is not a separate applied element but cast integral with the shaft, the loops and knot modelled as part of the column rather than attached to it afterwards — the mark of a piece cast from a properly developed model. The white pleated fabric shade is included and fitted, its vertical pleats echoing the column's vertical reeding below. The brass throughout has the warm, slightly darkened tone of genuine age.
