Antique French Table Lamp Base, Faceted Crystal and Gilt Brass, Flower Collar — France, Early 20th Century

The crystal and brass table lamp was one of the French decorative industry's most enduring combinations. From the chandelier workshops of the nineteenth century, the technique of stacking faceted crystal elements on a metal rod — each piece cut to catch and refract the light — passed into the domestic lamp trade, where it produced bases of considerable visual presence from relatively modest materials. The best examples combined the light-catching quality of the crystal with brass fittings of genuine decorative interest: collars, bases, and discs that complemented rather than merely supported the glass.

This lamp base is French, early twentieth century, in faceted crystal and gilt brass, the form a stacked column of three cut crystal elements — each one a double-ended diamond form with faceted faces — separated by gilt brass collars and rising from a circular base inset with a ring of cut crystal panels around its circumference. Between the lower two crystal elements, a large gilt brass flower collar spreads outward — its petals cast individually in the round, each one a broad, slightly cupped form — the decorative centrepiece of the composition and the detail that gives this base its particular character. Note how the flower collar sits at the visual midpoint of the column, its broad horizontal spread balancing the vertical thrust of the crystal elements above and below — the compositional decision of a designer who understood the lamp base as a sculptural object. The gilt brass is warm across the fittings; the crystal is clear and bright throughout.
