Antique Hand-Colored Engraving, La Cascade | Vallaert & Pillemant, 18th Century | Framed Waterfall Landscape Print
Long before photography, a landscape traveled the world through the hands of two craftsmen — one who drew it, one who engraved it. This antique print carries both their names still: "Vallaert, delf." in the corner marking the original drawing, and "V. Pillemant, fils Sculp." marking the engraving that turned it into something that could be printed, colored, and hung on a wall a world away from where the waterfall actually fell.
The scene itself is a cascade tumbling through rocky terrain, with a bridge and distant buildings rising above the falls, and a small group of figures gathered at the water's edge in the foreground. Hand-colored in soft period tones, the engraving retains the fine linework of true 18th-century printmaking beneath the added color. It survives in its aged mount, with a green and cream double border, held in its original wooden frame.
The print presents in its authentic aged condition, with the toning, foxing, and edge wear expected of paper this old, and a frame that carries its own history of display. This is a piece meant for those who want the real texture of the past on their wall, not a copy of it.
