Antique Pair of Empire Style Brass-Tone Candlesticks with Ringed Shafts and Chased Diaper Bands19th Century

Tall and plain, these two candlesticks rely on clean shapes rather than heavy ornament, with just a band of fine crisscross chasing near the foot.

Each candlestick is brass-tone metal. A ringed, tapering shaft rises from an urn-shaped knop with a chased diaper band, up to a knopped stem and an urn-shaped candle cup. The broad, round, stepped base is edged with a matching chased band. Candlesticks of this period were made with wide, heavy bases for a good reason. A tall candle burning on a busy dinner table could easily be knocked, and a low, broad base kept the flame upright and safely away from the tablecloth.

The candlesticks are in very good antique condition. They have stood on many tables for more than a century, and they're ready for another. They suit a mantelpiece, a dining table, a console or a sideboard.
