Antique Pair of Louis XVI Style Small Gilt Metal Candlesticks on Pink Veined Stone Plinths, Fluted Columns with Festoons

Little garlands hang from ribbon bows around each short fluted column, and a soft pink stone block sets each one off from below. Made for a dressing table, they're small and full of detail.

Each candlestick is made of gilt metal. A short fluted column is hung with laurel garlands tied with ribbon bows, and stands on a round leaf-cast base. On top sits an urn-shaped candle cup, ribbed below and edged with beading at the rim. Each one rests on a square plinth of pink veined stone with bevelled edges. A garland draped between two fixing points like this is called a festoon. Louis XVI designers used festoons everywhere, on furniture, clocks, silver and walls, as a sign of celebration and plenty.

The candlesticks are in very good antique condition. Generations have looked after them, and we hope you will too. Their low height suits a dressing table, a bedside table or a mantelpiece, where they can be seen up close.
