Antique Pair of Louis XVI Style Two-Arm Gilt Metal Torch Wall Sconces with Urn Finials and Beaded Drip Pans
Each of these sconces is shaped like a tall, narrow torch, and two curling arms reach out from it to hold the lights. They bring neat, upright symmetry to a hallway, a mantel wall or the space either side of a bed.
The centre of each sconce is a tapering torch shaft with a leafy garland at the top. A small urn wrapped in leaves sits on top, ending in a turned finial. At the bottom the shaft finishes in a leafy drop. Scrolled arms with acanthus details come out below the urn. Each arm carries a fluted drip pan edged with beading, a ribbed candle cup and a cream candle sleeve. The leafy drop is what the French call a "cul-de-lampe", literally the "bottom of the lamp". The name comes from the carved ornaments that hung beneath church oil lamps, and it later came to mean any hanging finial like this one.
The pair is in good antique condition. The torches are a brighter gold than the arms and cups, which have a deeper patina. The candle sleeves are discoloured, with a small tear at the top edge of one. The old wiring reaches us as found. Looked after, these sconces will light a room for years to come. Hang them either side of a mirror, a painting or a doorway.
Leaf-drop pair: two antique Louis XVI style gilt metal torch sconces, each with two scrolled arms, beaded drip pans and an urn finial, rewired in our workshop and ready to install.
