Antique Pair of Restauration Style Brass-Tone Candlesticks, Chased Diaper Pattern Baluster Shafts, Mid 19th Century

Each of these small candlesticks is covered in a fine net of diamonds and scales, worked by hand into the metal, so they glitter even before a candle is lit.

Each candlestick has a baluster-shaped shaft in brass-tone metal, chased all over with a diamond and scale pattern. Above it are knurled bands and an urn-shaped candle cup. The shaft stands on a round, domed base edged with a chased rope-like band. "Chasing" means working the surface of the metal after casting, using small hammers and punches to press in a pattern one stroke at a time. That's why each diamond and scale is slightly different from the next.

The candlesticks are in very good antique condition. Generations of owners have looked after them, and we hope they continue that way. Their small size suits a dining table, a dressing table, a desk or a mantelpiece.
