Antique Pair of Small Meiji Style Patinated Metal Bottle Vases, Peonies and Flying Birds in Relief
Peonies open across the round bodies of these little vases, and on each slender neck a small bird flies upward. They make a quiet, matching pair.
Each vase has a round body and a tall, narrow cylindrical neck, made of patinated metal with a warm brown tone and set on a stepped round foot. The body is cast in low relief with peony flowers and broad leaves, and a small bird in flight is applied to the neck. A round body with a long, narrow neck like this is called "tsurukubi" in Japanese, meaning "crane's neck", after the long, elegant neck of the crane. It's a classic shape for a single stem of flowers.
The vases are in very good antique condition, with an even patina. They have travelled together for over a century, and they're ready for a new shelf. Use them for single stems or dried flowers on a mantelpiece, a windowsill or a dressing table.
The two vases: a pair of small Meiji style patinated metal bottle vases with peonies and flying birds in relief.
