Antique Repoussé Copper Table Lamp Base, Hunting Scenes in Relief — Europe, 19th Century

Repoussé copper — the technique of hammering a design into relief from the reverse side of a sheet of metal — reached a particular height of popularity in the nineteenth century, when craftsmen across Europe applied it to everything from ecclesiastical vessels to domestic lamp bases. The hunting scene was among its favoured subjects, a genre with roots stretching back to medieval tapestry and armour decoration, translated here into a material and technique that gave the galloping horses and pursuing hounds genuine sculptural depth rather than a flat printed image.

This lamp base is European, nineteenth century, in copper worked entirely in repoussé relief. The body rises in two tiers — a narrower upper drum and a broader lower drum, each banded top and bottom with borders of scrolling acanthus and foliate ornament — and across both registers, hunting scenes unfold in continuous narrative: a mounted huntsman in pursuit, hounds coursing after fleeing game, each figure caught mid-action within the composition. On the lower tier, the scene is organised around framed circular medallions, each containing its own vignette of a hound bringing down its quarry, set within a field of scrolling floral vine work. Note how the relief depth varies deliberately across the piece — the figures and animals raised higher and more sharply defined than the surrounding foliate ground, the technique that gives repoussé work its characteristic sense of theatre, the principal subjects appearing to stand forward from the surface rather than simply being outlined upon it.
