Antique Single Louis XVI Style Bronze-Tone Wall Sconce with Laurel Wreath and Frosted Glass Tulip Shade

A laurel wreath tied with a bow crowns this sconce, and a frosted glass tulip hangs from its leafy arm like a flower opening on the wall.

The back plate is topped with a laurel wreath and a ribbon bow over a framed oval panel. Below, a fluted pilaster crossed with ribbons ends in a small rose. A curling acanthus arm reaches out to a frosted glass tulip shade with a ruffled, folded rim, held in a small gallery. Frosted glass gets its soft, milky look from a roughened surface. Around 1900, that was usually done with acid or a fine blast of sand. The rough surface scatters the light, so it glows evenly and hides the bulb.

The sconce is complete, with its glass shade, and in good antique condition. It isn't yet wired for electricity. It has come through more than a century in one piece and is ready for a new wall. Hang it beside a doorway, a mirror or a bed.
