Art Deco Marble Bowl on Four Marble Feet, Grey and Cream — Europe, Vintage

The Art Deco fascination with marble produced some of the period's most purely sculptural table pieces — objects that let the stone's own veining carry the decoration, set against hard geometric forms that owed nothing to carved ornament. A shallow bowl raised on contrasting marble feet was a favoured solution: the two materials, one dark and dramatically veined, one pale and quiet, doing all the visual work that applied decoration would have done in an earlier period.

This bowl is European, vintage, carved from a single dense grey-brown marble with striking white veining running through its faceted octagonal form. The shallow circular well sits within a broad, flat octagonal rim, the eight bevelled facets catching the light differently as the eye moves around the piece — a deliberate geometric counterpoint to the organic, unpredictable veining of the stone itself. The bowl is raised on four short cylindrical feet in a contrasting pale cream and pink-veined marble, the colour and material shift between bowl and feet giving the piece its considered two-part composition. Note how the feet are not merely functional supports but a genuine second material choice — a designer's decision to let two different marbles speak to each other rather than carving the whole piece from a single block.

The marble is in excellent condition throughout, with no chips or cracks noted. It sits well as a table centrepiece, a catch-all dish, or a decorative object in its own right on a console or sideboard.
