Blue and White Bottle Vase with Figures at Play, Plantain Leaf Neck and Lotus Scroll Shoulder, Chinese Style, 27 cm

Around the belly of this vase, a crowd of figures gathers at a low table while children run and play beyond them. Painted in cobalt blue on a white ground, the scene reads like a single lively afternoon. It is a vase that invites a closer look.

The vase has a globular body and a tall, slender neck. A band of stepped key pattern runs around the rim, tall plantain leaves climb the neck, and a band of scrolling lotus flowers circles the shoulder. The body is painted all around with a scene of figures gathered at a table and children at play, in blue on white. Blue-and-white ware is painted in cobalt before glazing and then covered with a clear glaze, so the design is sealed beneath the surface.

The vase is in good vintage condition. It is passed on with its painted scene complete. On a mantelpiece, a bookshelf or a console, it holds a single branch of blossom or stands on its own as a classic blue-and-white accent.

At a glance: a blue and white glazed ceramic bottle vase with a figural scene, plantain leaves on the neck and lotus scrolls on the shoulder.
