Blue and White Hexagonal Tea Caddy with Cover, Landscape and Bird Panels, Chinese Style, 23.5 cm
Six painted sides, each a small world: a mountain pavilion on one, a pair of birds on a flowering rock on another. Turning this tall jar is like leafing through a book of blue-and-white pictures. It is a classic piece that suits both a kitchen shelf and a formal room.
The jar is hexagonal, with a short round neck and a tall, cylindrical cover that fits over it like an upturned cup. Its sides alternate between white panels painted with landscapes and birds and dark blue panels with white flowering scrolls, framed by patterned bands at the shoulder and foot. The shoulder is painted with flower baskets, vases and ribbons. These belong to the "hundred antiques" theme, scholars' treasures painted to wish learning and good fortune on the owner.
The jar is in good vintage condition, with light staining inside the cover. It keeps its fitted cover, which completes its tall silhouette. On a kitchen shelf it holds loose tea, and on a bookshelf or mantelpiece it stands as a crisp blue-and-white accent.
The piece: a hexagonal blue and white glazed ceramic tea caddy with a cylindrical cover, painted with landscape and bird panels.
