Blue and White Porcelain Vase, Peony Decoration, Marked Base — China, 20th Century

The peony has carried symbolic weight in Chinese decorative art for over a thousand years — prosperity, honour, and good fortune rendered as an open, full-petalled bloom, painted so often onto porcelain that the flower and the medium have become almost inseparable in the Western imagination of Chinese ceramics. A vase decorated this way was never simply ornamental: it carried a wish for the household that displayed it, and the quality of the painting — how confidently the brush moved, how the shading built the volume of each petal — told a knowing buyer everything about the workshop that produced it.

This vase is Chinese, twentieth century, in blue and white porcelain, bearing a mark on the underside of the foot. The form is a flattened globular body rising to a narrow neck with a flared trumpet mouth, the silhouette borrowed from the classic moon flask tradition. Across the full width of the body, peony blooms and foliage spread in a continuous painted composition — one large central bloom shown fully open and shaded from pale to deep cobalt at its centre, smaller buds and leaves scrolling outward and around the shoulders on curling stems. Note how the leaves are painted with individual serrated edges and visible veining, each one worked separately rather than repeated as a simplified motif — the hand-painted attention that distinguishes a considered piece from a mass-produced transfer pattern. A narrow triangular border frieze rings the neck, the geometric counterpoint to the organic floral body below.
