Bohemian Cut Crystal Vase with Gilt Rim, Diamond-Cut Urn Form on Square Sawtooth Base, Original Labels

Cut crystal is at its best in daylight, and this vase is covered in facets made to catch it. Set near a window, it throws small sparks of light across a table and finishes in a band of gold at the rim. It is a classic piece of dining-room glamour.

The vase is shaped like a classical urn and cut in bands from rim to foot. There are tall flutes below the rim, a band of fine cross-cut diamonds, a ring of block cuts, and a second diamond band above a short stem. The square foot has sawtooth edges and a starburst cut underneath. The rim is finished in a wide gilt band with a beaded pattern. Diamond patterns like these are cut on a spinning wheel: two sets of V-shaped grooves are ground across each other, leaving rows of tiny pyramids that send light in every direction.

The vase is in very good vintage condition. Its original labels are still in place, and it will go to you with them intact. Filled with roses or peonies on a dining table or sideboard, it makes a formal centrepiece. Empty, it holds its own on a shelf where the light can reach it.
