Brass Table Lamp with Navy Blue Painted Urn Body, Fluted Column Base, and Swag Detail

The urn form, flanked by swagged ribbon-and-rosette mounts, is one of the more enduring shapes in European lamp-making — a vessel silhouette borrowed from classical architecture and repeated across brass and gilt-metal lighting for its balanced proportions and its ready-made spot for decorative banding at the neck and shoulder. Pairing a painted or lacquered body with brass mounts was a common way to let the metalwork read as ornament against a solid ground color, rather than competing with a busy surface.

This lamp follows that formula closely: a navy-painted urn-form body banded top and bottom in fluted brass, with swagged ribbon-and-rosette mounts applied at the shoulder, rising through a fluted brass neck to the shade fitting, and set on a fluted brass column over a square brass foot. The swag-and-rosette motif is a detail worth noting on its own — it imitates drapery, a decorative device classical architecture used to visually soften the transition between a vessel's wider body and its narrower neck, and lampmakers borrowed it for exactly the same purpose here.

Condition is good based on the photographs provided, with no losses noted. The piece has clearly been well kept, and now moves forward to a new setting. It would suit a console table, a sideboard, or either side of a sofa, where the navy body and brass detailing can read clearly against a lighter wall.
