Brass-Tone Peacock Trinket Dish and Ashtray, Shield-Shaped with Scroll Border and Relief Tail Feathers, Art Nouveau Style
A peacock stands at the centre with its tail spread open behind it, and the feathers fill the whole dish. When light falls across it, every feather catches and shines. It is a small piece with a lot to look at.
The dish is shield-shaped and made of brass-tone metal, with the peacock worked in relief in the bowl. A border of curling scrolls runs around the edge, and sprays of leaves sit at the base. There are three shallow rests on the rim, two at the top and one at the bottom, so it works as an ashtray or as a dish for rings and small things. The peacock was a favourite motif of Art Nouveau designers around 1900, who loved it as a symbol of beauty and pride.
The dish is in very good vintage condition, with an even, mellow tone to the metal. We have looked after it for a short time, and it now passes to its next keeper. It suits a dressing table, a hall console or a desk, where it can hold keys, jewelry or paper clips.
