Bronze Wall Sconce, Empire Quiver Form with Three Arms — 20th Century

The quiver sconce — a horizontal torch or arrow-bundle mounted to the wall, from which candle arms descend — is one of the most specifically Empire of all lighting forms. Napoleon's designers lifted it directly from Roman military imagery: the quiver of arrows, the bound fasces, the torch held horizontally as a standard rather than raised as a flame. Mounted on the wall of a dining room or a grand salon, it read as both ornament and declaration, and the best examples from the Paris foundries were cast with the precision that the imagery demanded.

This sconce is twentieth century, cast in bronze in the Empire manner. The body is a horizontal fluted shaft — the quiver — enriched along its length with chased laurel and berry ornament and terminating at the right in a pine-cone finial. Note how the three arms are distributed vertically rather than radially — the arrangement that gives the quiver sconce its distinctive silhouette, vertical on the wall rather than spreading like a conventional backplate sconce, and the detail that makes it work equally well in a narrow space between two windows or doors. The gilt is warm and even throughout.
