Correspondence Box with Bird's-Eye Figured Veneer and Black Mouldings, Working Lock and Key, Victorian Style Letter Box
Letters, receipts, a few keepsakes: some things deserve a box that locks. This one keeps them close at hand on a desk, behind a honey-coloured front and a small key on a gold tassel. It is a piece that gives private papers a proper home.
The box is rectangular, with a front of pale honey veneer speckled with small bird's-eye figuring. It is framed by a black moulded top and a black stepped plinth. A small metal keyhole plate sits at the centre of the front, with its key and a gold-thread tassel, and a small gold-tone knob sits on the top. The small dimpled "eyes" in the veneer come from tiny disturbances in the grain as the tree grew. Cut thin and laid across a box, they give this scattered, speckled pattern.
The box is in good vintage condition. The lock works with its key, and the small wooden divider inside is missing. It comes with its key, which still turns the lock. On a writing desk or a bookshelf, it holds letters, photographs, jewelry or stationery.
In outline: a wooden box with a bird's-eye figured veneer front, black mouldings, a working lock and key with tassel, and a gold-tone knob, weighing about 536 g (1.2 lb).
