Half lion, half woman, and crowned with a pharaoh's headdress, this small sphinx sits upright and watchful. Its dark, smooth surface gives it the calm of an ancient guardian. It is a small figure with a long history of meaning behind it.
The figure is cast in dark brown patinated metal. It shows a seated sphinx with a woman's face and breast, a lion's body and paws, and a striped nemes headdress with a cobra rising at the brow. Two small holes on the side suggest it was once fixed to a larger piece, such as a clock or a piece of furniture. Napoleon's campaign in Egypt set off a craze for sphinxes, pharaohs and lotus flowers in French decorative arts, a taste known as Retour d'Égypte.
The figure is in good vintage condition, with two small fixing holes on the side. Its dark patina and fixing holes are part of its history, and they stay. On a desk, a bookshelf or in a cabinet of curiosities, it works as a paperweight or a small Egyptian Revival accent.
