The turned and ribbed candlestick column is one of the most enduring silhouettes in European lighting, carried almost unchanged from candle to oil to electric use across two centuries. Its strength was always its proportion — a campana-shaped socket, a swelling ribbed knop at the center, and a stepped, decorated foot — a shape stable enough to hold a single flame steady and, later, sturdy enough to carry a shade and a bulb without alteration to its silhouette.

This lamp is worked in gilt metal, its column built from a sequence of turned and cast elements: a campana socket with a guilloche band below its rim, a tapering shaft, a ribbed central knop, and a wide, stepped circular base decorated with a border of chased ornament. Note how the base carries two distinct decorative registers — a fine guilloche band near the foot and a broader beaded and stiff-leaf border below it — the kind of layered ornament associated with the neoclassical revival styles of the nineteenth century, here executed with real crispness of casting. The lamp is sold complete with its original beige conical fabric shade.

The piece reaches us in good general condition, with a pleasant even patina to the metal and light surface wear consistent with age and handling; the shade shows only faint, discreet marks of use. It was wired for electric use with a standard socket at some point in its working life, a common history for candlestick-form lamps of this kind. Placed on a bedside table or at one end of a console, its height and warm tone suit a reading corner well.
