Enamelled Glass Vase with Painted Lake Landscape, Tall Trees and Sailboats, Frosted Amber Ground, Art Nouveau Style

A lake at dusk, a stand of tall trees and two small sails on the water: the whole scene is painted onto a single glass vase. It reads like a small landscape painting you can turn in your hands. It is a piece for anyone who loves the countryside brought indoors.

The vase is tall and gently waisted, with a pinched, many-sided rim, made of frosted glass in a warm amber tone. On the front, slender dark-trunked trees rise in the foreground, their leaves in soft greens. Behind them lies a pale lake with small sailboats and a far bank of trees, and a band of green grass runs around the foot. Enamel is powdered coloured glass mixed with a medium, painted onto the surface, and then fired so that it fuses to the vase. That's why the colours sit slightly raised and have lasted.

The vase is in very good vintage condition. It moves on to its next shelf exactly as it reached us. Placed on a windowsill or in front of a lamp, it lets light through the frosted ground so the painted trees stand out against a warm glow.
